On a daily basis, our cars are a trusted part of our lives. From commuting to school pick-up, family vacations to family reunions, it’s important to make sure you maintain your vehicle. The better the maintenance, the longer your vehicle will last.
Early spring is the perfect time to check in on some basic maintenance steps. It’s easy to forego regular maintenance during the winter when the weather is cold, especially for to-dos you like to take care of yourself. Heading out for a spring break road trip? Here’s how to make sure your vehicle is ready for anything.
Avoid a Busted Battery. If your car has been sounding a little tired when you crank the ignition, it might be time for a new battery. If you’re heading out for a road trip, the last thing you want is to worry your car might die in the middle of nowhere. Check your battery levels before you leave to be sure your car can sustain a longer trip.
Keep Your Wheels Rolling. Check tire pressure before you hit the road. Flat tires are one of the most common travel headaches. While you’re focused on your tires, check your tread levels, too. Don’t forget your penny! Tire tread should be deep enough that when you place a penny between the ribs of the tire, Abraham Lincoln’s head will be partially covered. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head, your tires are worn enough that it’s time to replace them. Replace before you have a blowout. Shop ahead of time for the best deal.
Breathe Clean and Easy. Cabin air filters should be replaced about once a year, and spring is the perfect time to tackle this job. Springtime allergens, dust and pollen can wreak havoc on your allergies and cause sinus infections, but having a fresh, clean cabin air filter can help you breathe deep inside your car.
Fluid Fill Ups. All essential fluids should be topped off or changed before leaving for a longer trip. In addition to getting an oil change, take a look at your wiper fluid, transmission fluid and antifreeze, especially if traveling to a colder location for your trip.
Stop on a Dime. If it has been a while since you changed your brake pads, it’s time to give them some attention. It’s fairly simple to change brake pads yourself. The first signs of worn out brake pads are squeaking and whining when you brake. Occasionally brake dust can make this noise as well. If the noise doesn’t go away after braking a few times, it may be your brake pads needing to be replaced.
Drive Clean. Nothing will zap the excitement and refreshment of an anticipated spring break vacation like a dirty, funky ride. Start your trip out on a clean note.
